Research Mentors will supervise students in the laboratory and guide them through a research project that is either an active project of the scientists’ or a project within the scientist’s scope of work, while also supporting the students’ professional trajectories. Research mentors are responsible for choosing the research project the student will carry out. Mentors are also responsible for supporting student advisory sessions and interviews and must participate in 4 mentorship workshops over the year.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Mentor 2-3 high school students through the Science Research Mentoring Program (SRMP)
- Assist students in developing and executing a machine-learning based research project that allows students to engage in all aspects of the scientific method, including training needed in any specialized techniques relevant to the project
- Assist students in creating and presenting a scientific poster, talk, and paper
- Attend mentor professional developments (PDs) and other required trainings for part-time museum staff
The Research Mentor reports to the SRMP Manager.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a science related field
- Must have a record of and be actively engaged in research using machine learning
- Must have lab or research privileges in an AMNH research facility
- Masters or PhD in science
- Experience working with high school students
