As Dr. Washington points out, strategic planning is of utmost importance during this exciting time of dynamic shifts in the healthcare landscape. The Strategic Planning Department of Duke Health exists to guide and influence Duke Health’s strategic direction.

Duke Health is comprised of the Duke University Health System, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and faculty encompassing 3 hospitals, more than 140 clinics, and 2,200 providers. Duke Health is the top-ranked health system in North Carolina and a national leader in health care delivery, clinical research, and academics. This position will play a vital role in supporting a broad range of plans and analytics that meet the needs as outlined in the Strategic Planning Framework (www.dukehealthstrategy.duke.edu/).


Hybrid – A minimum would be 1 day/month on-site; ideally, it could be 1 day/week but that is flexible. Our on-site work location is the Creekstone building in RTP (4825 Creekstone Dr, Durham, NC 27703)


PURPOSE:
To provide support across Duke Health in the compilation, analysis, and modeling of market intelligence, health system activity, and healthcare forecasts for use in the development and implementation of strategic plans, business decisions, and ad hoc requests.


Job Responsibilities:

This position carries significant responsibilities for the analytic support needed to ensure that Duke Health makes appropriate strategic and business decisions. Responsibilities include analyzing and synthesizing data from a variety of sources, building complex models in Excel and other tools, and communicating information through executive dashboards and coherent written presentations. Analysts develop excellent quantitative and qualitative problem-solving skills while building a rich base of knowledge within the healthcare industry. Analysts will be required to understand the origin, usage, and limitations of data sets in order to appropriately develop actionable insights. Analysts gain exposure to the executive decision-making process and have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of one of the nation’s top healthcare systems. As such, this position carries high expectations for articulating the story behind the data.

Data Analysis and Data Visualization

  • Oversee the analysis and collection of data to respond to information needs for Duke Health’s strategic and business planning functions, understanding which data sources and components to utilize based on the given area of focus
  • Assist Duke Health entities and staff in effectively analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data and information to various parties both internal and external to Duke.
  • Develop Tableau dashboards to clearly communicate data insights through graphical visualizations and interactive controls
  • Incorporate Excel graphics, PowerPoint presentations, Tableau dashboards, and maps (using ArcGIS), as appropriate, to aid in the visual representation of market information.
  • Assist Duke Health staff in integrating market data with internal data generated by finance, marketing, and other relevant departments.
  • Appropriately communicate parameters, assumptions, and details related to the data and analysis conducted.
  • Keep the manager apprised of the progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines.


Analytical Modeling

  • Develop robust data models in Excel to communicate outcomes in service utilization, growth, demand, market share, and workforce needs based on variable inputs
  • Collaborate with team members to validate and document assumptions
  • Incorporate functionality to stress-test model outputs using variable parameter inputs based on validated assumptions
  • Ability to ensure models tie in with other tools and are easily updateable

Strategy and Business Plan Development

  • Participate in planning meetings to assist in the development of Duke Health strategic plans and business cases.
  • Identify necessary data to be collected. Effectively analyze the information to garner key insights and develop recommendations.
  • Appropriately integrate internal data generated by finance, facility planning, and other relevant departments, as appropriate.
  • Develop supporting analytics to advanHealth’se Health strategic planning goals, critically assessing the needs of each individual business plan and providing content that is uniquely positioned to address the specific question and/or topithe c.
  • Keep manager apthe prised of progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Appropriately manage the repository of historical plans, data pulls, and deliverables.


Ad-Hoc Reporting

  • Receive and track project requests; review and clarify with stakeholders, as needed.
  • Identify necessary data to be collected and run reports for specific requests about the market and service area.
  • Assist Duke Health entities and staff in developing ad-hoc reports aimed at extracting the relevant data needed by the end user.
  • Effectively analyze and interpret the data/information to garner key insights and present the information in a clear, concise, and polished manner.
  • Keep manager apthe prised of progress and status of all projects. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Appropriately manage the repository of historical requests, data pulls, and deliverables.


Additional Duties

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Monitor local, regional, and national trends. Support market research functions in support of planning initiatives.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other members of the department to ensure effective and efficient completion of projects and for purposes of problem solving and on-the-job training.


Licensure, Training, and Policies

Must maintain compliance with all mandatory DUHS policies, training, and health/safety requirements


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail; ability to produce polished deliverables
  • Problem-solving skills, including the ability to work independently and systematically to analyze complex data, draw relevant conclusions, and successfully devise/implement solutions calmly and effectively
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives, shifting back and forth effectively among activities, to produce positive results in a dynamic environment
  • Strong technical skills and familiarity with analytics tools, including Excel, Tableau, and SQL
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Proactive and self-motivated; ability to perform with minimal supervision
  • Intellectually curious with a deep interest in the Healthcare industry
  • Thirst for continuous learning, investigative analytics, and creative problem solving


Minimum Qualifications


Education

Bachelor’s degree in a business, healthcare, or quantitative field is required. A masters’s degree is preferred.


Experience

Work requires three years of related experience. A Masters’s degree can substitute for two years of experience. Previous work experience in consulting, financial analysis, investment banking, strategic planning, or actuarial science is desired.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required, including demonstrated accomplishments in data analytics. Tableau familiarity is expected, and dashboard development experience is strongly preferred. SQL and/or ArcGIS experience is also preferred, but not required. Working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint is strongly preferred, including experience drafting written materials and visuals for executive leadership and/or regulatory stakeholders
