This position primarily involves a hybrid work schedule – working remotely: Monday & Friday / on site: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Business Intelligence Data Analyst is part of an agile data warehouse and business intelligence team focused on creating and sustaining an accurate, integrated, and authoritative business information analysis capability with powerful, easy-to-use, and highly available tools. This person works the data program manager, data architects, developers, and end users to improve and extend the abilities of business data analysts and managers to easily interpret large amounts of complex data to identify actionable business insights, make better business decisions, and discover strategic opportunities.
The role includes analyzing and understanding business data, creating and validating new business intelligence capabilities, assisting end users with identifying and using business data, producing requirements documentation for data warehouse developers, and coordinating data warehouse project tasks and deliverables. Excellent and effective communication skills are essential for this role.
The NYL Direct data warehouse and business intelligence platform is a complex environment requiring familiarity with the database management systems and end-user data tools.
Responsibilities for this position include –
- Broad experience working with business intelligence tools such as, MicroStrategy, Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI, etc.
- Ability to integrate data from multiple data sources into logical BI/data warehouse system objects while ensuring data integrity and credibility.
- Ability to work effectively with business stakeholders to analyze business needs, document requirements, and identify/define BI/data warehouse solutions to address various reporting and analysis needs.
- Provide data analysis and consultation service to other business areas, leadership, etc.
- Work with business analysts and stakeholders to understand requirements for data analysis, data structures, information delivery and reporting.
- Studies and understands the company’s business processes and applications, including their effect on data and reporting, and applies the knowledge gained in designing data warehouses and reports.
- Ensure data structures, reports and any other data-related item meets standards and guidelines outlined by Data Governance.
Extending BI Capabilities
- Keep abreast of new analysis, visualization, reporting techniques and software to develop a more powerful analytics platform.
- Be a trusted technical advisor to customers and solve complex data challenges.
- Firm understanding of data mining and visualization techniques, ability to apply context to data, and strong ability to communicate the data (verbal and written).
- Superior understanding of database query languages and substantial knowledge in analytical approaches.
- Formal experience in end-to-end development of complex reports and dashboards utilizing business intelligence tools.
- Work with technical support staff to determine root cause of database application issues.
- Support business users and other stakeholders with the use of data warehouse systems, user acceptance testing, etc.
- Create and maintain documentation for data warehouse and business intelligence requirements, technical specifications, and other technical documentation for use by the team and other stakeholders.
- Help drive optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality and our ability to use data to make product decisions.
- Support the broader DW team to optimize the existing data warehouse and efforts to create a single version of the truth.
Data Warehouse Project Coordination
- Support program manager and/or project leads in the planning and execution of BI/data specific projects, including executing small projects independently.
- Prepare agendas, create meeting minutes, track follow ups and action items via regular status reports.
- Help maintain project management deliverables.
- Escalating functional, quality, and timeline issues appropriately.
- Tracking key project milestones and adjusting project plans and/or resources.
- Coordinating communication with all areas of the enterprise that impacts the scope, budget, risk, and resources of the work effort being managed.
- Assist in maintaining positive and effective communication.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.
- Five to seven years of relevant experience.
- Ability to manage workload in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
- Ability to organize people to achieve goals, manage frequently changing priorities, facilitate and document meetings, etc.
- Experience working in an Agile software development methodology (e.g. Scrum, Kanban).
- Proficient skills with Oracle, SQL Server, SSIS and MicroStrategy.
- Experience with relational and dimensional databases.
- Strong PC experience including Windows and the MS Office suite.
- Strong oral and written communications.
- Ability to effectively function as a member of a team.
- Ability to share learned knowledge to increase support level of database systems.
- Willingness to learn through on-the-job experience and to support new technology.
- Willingness to perform additional, unplanned project work as assigned.
