What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a dedicated, hardworking R&D Computer Science professional to join our team! You will assist in evaluating information systems, by applying computational rigor to, and emphasize issues in, information systems and assessing data at different scales. You will focus on the hard-to-predict aggregate of information to identify generalizable mechanisms giving rise to emergent properties of information networks/systems. You will help to grow our competency base for characterizing data (i.e., text, image, video)/information at multiple levels of abstraction and aggregation (including event processing, signal processing, data processing, data streams processing, agent processing, state processing). You will develop and supply methodologies, approaches, and tools for formal and robust behavioral data construction, impact modeling, pattern analysis, and others.

You will bring the skills, knowledge, and technical experience needed to solve the group’s most complex systems research needs applied to national security problems. The problems we address involve large complex adaptive systems that involve human behavior, dynamics, and other complex, human influenced, and dynamical aspects. The role will involve conducting technical outreach, and designing and developing rigorous solutions for decision makers across a broad range of work as well as provide analytical expertise on existing and new problem spaces. In this position, you will grow a portfolio of projects based on your expertise and your demonstrated history of technical leadership.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work closely with leadership, technical staff, and customers to define problems, collaboratively define solutions, and shape technical work.
  • Develop models and simulations to address problems across various science and engineering domains.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams and proposal development efforts.
  • Present project work at conferences and customer briefings.
  • Work closely with analysts and software engineers to develop models into applications.
  • Publish research in journals, conference papers, and technical reports.
  • Design communication of technical results to convey impact and influence customer decisions.
  • Brainstorm new approaches to difficult problems.
  • Apply and combine innovative techniques from multiple fields of science.

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require

    • Network science
    • Models and Simulations with emerging properties
    • Agent-based modeling with dynamic-personality agents
    • Event and Signal Processing
    • Sampling, specifically the nature of social relationships within a network
    • Intelligence and Security Informatics
    • Data Streams Processing
    • Social Sequence Analysis
    • Computational Sociology
  • Experience working successfully with researchers, analysts, and software engineers
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop, deliver and present technical ideas and results

About Our Team

The Complex Systems for National Security Group (Group 5520 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) researches and applies mathematical, computational science, and systems engineering approaches to analyze, predict and influence the behavior of complex, highly interdependent systems critical to our nation’s security. We provide capabilities motivated by the challenge of understanding, quantifying, and controlling the resilience of key complex systems critical to the laboratories’ National Security mission. The approaches and capabilities we provide are used to address complicated system and enterprise-level challenges facing a diverse set of national security partners. We also conduct work and advance capabilities in the areas of complex systems resilience and quantitative metrics development, risk analysis, economic analysis, and data acquisition and analysis.

The Mathematical Analysis and Decision Science department conducts work in the areas of modeling, simulation, analysis, systems research, and optimization. We provide advanced simulation and analysis capability to understand and influence complex systems. We use techniques from discrete event simulation, systems dynamics, optimization, and statistical analysis, to study complex systems and address national security challenges.
