Work Performed:

Program Administration and Operations: 20%

  • Liaison with SSRI evaluation team to ensure that programmatic goals and learning outcomes are established and assessment plans implemented. Set priorities accordingly.
  • Cooperate and coordinate with SSRI Director of Communications to ensure all MIDS-related external communications are appropriate, accurate, and aligned with program goals. This communication will be from the recruitment stages through to alumni relations.
  • Design and implement student services and activities that help students navigate the integration of the different facets of academic life into a fulfilling and coherent academic and career plan.
  • Support the DGS in ensuring the accurate and timely implementation of Graduate School policies and procedures.
  • Cultivate partnerships with University academic departments, administrative units, and community organizations to ensure the consistent delivery of high quality services to students and key constituents.
  • Supervise Program Coordinator, Staff Assistant and Teaching Assistants, and Work Study students.

Student Development and Support: Academic and Programmatic: 20%

  • Determine and interpret student services and academic needs on an individual and cohort basis; organize and plan services and activities accordingly.
  • Advise students on policy issues, act as student advocate, initiate referrals to appropriate student and/or academic services, and resolve problems as needed.
  • Serve as first point of contact and main staff student advisor, ensuring students abide by program and university policies and practices and counseling students in individual and group settings on personal, academic, and career-related topics.
  • Create support structures to retain students who are experiencing unexpected academic or personal challenges.
  • Assist students in recognizing and achieving their educational goals through engagement with faculty, staff, and university resources.
  • Liaison with other Duke offices as needed.
  • Recruit and hire TAs for MIDS courses.

Student Development and Support: Career Readiness: 30%

  • Organize career readiness programming to prepare students to be successful in their internship and job search.
  • Design and deliver career readiness workshops.
  • Identify and secure guest speakers, trainers, and industry experts for workshops, activities, and events.
  • Meet with individual students 1:1 to provide individualized advising, feedback, and support on career-related topics, including targeting their search, resumes, cover letters, digital presence, networking, attending career fairs and events, interviewing, and negotiating.
  • Facilitate connections between students and recruiters/opportunities for internships and jobs.
  • Follow up with students who have had interviews, track their progress, and report on internship and job outcomes.
  • Develop resources to help students prepare for job search and interviews, such as mock interview rubric, sample behavioral and technical questions, case study preparation, etc.
  • Serve as program point of contact for international visa issues, including CPT and OPT.
  • Curate and post full time career and summer internship opportunities.

Admissions – Recruitment & Enrollment: 30%

  • Devise, articulate, and execute recruitment strategy to increase and diversify pool of applicants.
  • Conduct marketing and outreach via various social media channels.
  • Attend and present at recruitment events.
  • Serve as the “face” of the program to prospective students.
  • Cultivate prospective students prior to application deadline, meeting with individual students as well as organizing group information sessions.
  • Work closely with faculty chair of admissions to select, admit, and matriculate a qualified, diverse cohort of between 35 and 50 students.
  • Make recommendations on criteria, parameters, and processes for selection and scholarship distribution.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the online application platform (Slate) and oversee technical side of the application process.
  • Review and rate applications.
  • Make decisions on scholarship distribution.
  • Interview applicants.
  • Manage all program-related communications to admitted students.
  • Meet with admitted students to answer their questions, respond to their concerns, refer to others as appropriate, and convert from admitted to accepted.
  • Advise students on visa issues related to accepting offer of admissions, consulting and referring students to Duke Visa Services when appropriate.
  • Plan, organize, and manage online summer review, bootcamp, orientation, and registration and fall enrollment for matriculating students.
  • Create yearly report on Admissions Recruitment and Enrollment strategy.

Desired Experience and Skills: This role requires exceptional professionalism, emotional intelligence, sound judgement, compassion, and confidence when dealing with personal matters. The ability to coordinate detailed logistical planning to manage a budget, and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing is essential. A successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to set strategies and make sound decisions independently, to work effectively under pressure, to meet deadlines, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing situations. The successful candidate should either have experience working with data scientists, or be able to demonstrate an ability and willingness to become an expert in data science culture quickly. Proficiency in all student systems, including Duke Hub, Course Requests, DSV, Graduate School Financial web program is required within 3 months of start date.

In general, the candidate will be expected to continue developing new skills and knowledge throughout the position’s tenure; enthusiasm about life-long learning is required. Candidates who will be most successful in this role will be those who excel at co-creating strategic visions, and who are able to design and implement their own strategies for new ideas and initiatives while collaborating closely with others. Therefore, a minimum of ten years of demonstrated experience as a manager or director is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a general business background generally equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a business related field.

Experience

Work requires 2 years related business or administrative experience to become familiar with general personnel practices, accounting and budgeting principles and coordination of major office activities. A master’s degree in a business related field may be substituted for 2 years experience. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
